High Flier is a small but powerful portrait of a Common Buzzard (Buteo Buteo) and there's nothing common about these wonderful large birds I see soaring above the Calder valley these days. Like all raptors they have savage-looking beaks and piercing eyes, yet their calls are surprisingly supplicating mews.
The image is made with willow charcoal and Conté a Paris Pierre Noire pencils, giving a lovely contrast between the soft dark grey charcoal and the rich black of the Pierre Noire.
The drawing is mounted on a thick circular panel and protected with the application of cold wax which acts as a varnish. It is ready to hang with a D-ring attached to the back.
The diameter of the circle is 13cm and the depth of the panel is approximately 2 cm.
